Theory of disorder-induced multiple coherent scattering in photonic crystal waveguides
We introduce a theoretical formalism to describe disorder-induced extrinsic
scattering in slow-light photonic crystal waveguides. This work details and
extends the optical scattering theory used in a recent \emph{Physical Review
Letter} [M. Patterson \emph{et al.}, \emph{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{102},
103901 (2009)] to describe coherent scattering phenomena and successfully
explain complex experimental measurements. Our presented theory, that combines
Green function and coupled mode methods, allows one to self-consistently
account for arbitrary multiple scattering for the propagating electric field
and recover experimental features such as resonances near the band edge. The
technique is fully three-dimensional and can calculate the effects of disorder
on the propagating field over thousands of unit cells. As an application of
this theory, we explore various sample lengths and disordered instances, and
demonstrate the profound effect of multiple scattering in the waveguide
transmission. The spectra yield rich features associated with disorder-induced
localization and multiple scattering, which are shown to be exasperated in the
slow light propagation regime
Rendering PostScript<sup>TM</sup> fonts on FPGAs
This paper describes how custom computing machines can be used to implement a simple outline font processor. An FPGA based co-processor is used to accelerate the compute intensive portions of font rendering. The font processor builds on several PostScript components previously presented by the authors to produce a system that can rapidly render fonts. A prototype implementation is described followed by an explanation of how this could be extended to build a complete system
Streaks to Rings to Vortex Grids: Generic Patterns in Transient Convective Spin-Up
We observe the transient formation of a ringed pattern state during spin-up
of an evaporating fluid on a time scale of order a few Ekman spin-up times. The
ringed state is probed using infrared thermometry and particle image
velocimetry and it is demonstrated to be a consequence of the transient balance
between Coriolis and viscous forces which dominate inertia, each of which are
extracted from the measured velocity field. The breakdown of the ringed state
is quantified in terms of the antiphasing of these force components which
drives a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and we show that the resulting vortex
grid spacing scales with the ring wavelength. This is the fundamental route to
quasi-two dimensional turbulent vortex flow and thus may have implications in
astrophysics and geophysics wherein rotating convection is ubiquitous. sics.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Closed-drift thruster investigations
Recent data obtained from a second generation closed-drift thruster design, employing Hall current acceleration is outlined. This type device is emphasized for electric propulsion for geocentric mission applications. Because geocentric mission profiles are best achieved with a specific impulse range of 1000 to 2000 s, closed-drift thrusters are well suited for this application, permitting time payload compromises intermediate of those possible with either electrothermal or electrostatic devices. A discussion is presented of the potential advantages of using a 1000 to 2000 s device for one way orbit raising of nonpower payloads. Because closed-drift thruster operation is not space charge limited, and requires only one power circuit for steady state operation, their application is technically advantageous. Beam, plasma and thrust characteristics are detailed for a range of operating conditions
High-flux beam source for cold, slow atoms or molecules
We demonstrate and characterize a high-flux beam source for cold, slow atoms
or molecules. The desired species is vaporized using laser ablation, then
cooled by thermalization in a cryogenic cell of buffer gas. The beam is formed
by particles exiting a hole in the buffer gas cell. We characterize the
properties of the beam (flux, forward velocity, temperature) for both an atom
(Na) and a molecule (PbO) under varying buffer gas density, and discuss
conditions for optimizing these beam parameters. Our source compares favorably
to existing techniques of beam formation, for a variety of applications.Comment: 5 Pages, 4 figure
Influences on recruitment to randomised controlled trials in mental health settings in England: a national cross-sectional survey of researchers working for the Mental Health Research Network
Background: Recruitment to trials is complex and often protracted; selection bias may compromise generalisability. In the mental health field (as elsewhere), diverse factors have been described as hindering researcher access to potential participants and various strategies have been proposed to overcome barriers. However, the extent to which various influences identified in the literature are operational across mental health settings in England has not been systematically examined.
Methods: A cross-sectional, online survey of clinical studies officers employed by the Mental Health Research Network in England to recruit to trials from National Health Service mental health services. The bespoke questionnaire invited participants to report exposure to specified influences on recruitment, the perceived impact of these on access to potential participants, and to describe additional positive or negative influences on recruitment. Analysis employed descriptive statistics, the framework approach and triangulation of data.
Results: Questionnaires were returned by 98 (58%) of 170 clinical studies officers who reported diverse experience. Data demonstrated a disjunction between policy and practice. While the particulars of trial design and various marketing and dommunication strategies could influence recruitment, consensus was that the culture of NHS mental health services is not donducive to research. Since financial rewards for recruitment paid to Trusts and feedback about studies seldom reaching frontline services, clinicians were described as distanced from research. Facing continual service change and demanding clinical workloads, clinicians generally did not prioritise recruitment activities. Incentives to trial participants had variable impact on access but recruitment could be enhanced by engagement of senior investigators and integrating referral with routine practice. Comprehensive, robust feasibility studies and reciprocity
between researchers and clinicians were considered crucial to successful recruitment.
Conclusions: In the mental health context, researcher access to potential trial participants is multiply influenced. Gatekeeping clinicians are faced with competing priorities and resources constrain research activity. It seems that environmental adjustment predicated on equitable resource allocation is needed if clinicians in NHS mental health services are to fully support the conduct of randomised controlled trials. Whilst cultural transformation, requiring changes in assumptions and values, is complex, our findings suggest that attention to practical matters can support this and highlight issues requiring careful consideration
